Court deals new blow to DOMA

A New York-based federal appeals court on Thursday become the second appellate bench in the nation to strike down Defense of Marriage Act, which bans married same-sex couples from receiving federal benefits.

Although about 8 other district and circuit courts have recently ruled the same, this ruling is significant in that it was the first to hold that laws that classify people based on sexual orientation are subject to a higher degree of scrutiny because gays are a minority with a long history of being victims of discrimination: http://www.buzzfeed.com/chrisgeidner/federal-appeals-court-doma-is-unconstitutional
